Smaranda Muresan is a Research Scientist at the Center for Computational Learning Systems at Columbia University. Her research interests are at the intersection of natural language processing and machine learning. Her research is focused on grammar induction, computational semantics, language in social media, and applications to computational social science and health informatics. Her work is funded primarily by DARPA and NSF.She received her PhD in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2006. From September 2006 to August 2008 she was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, University of Maryland College Park, working on machine translation. Before joining CCLS in September 2013, she was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Library and Information Science and a Graduate Faculty in the Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University. At Rutgers, she was the co-founder and co-director of the Laboratory for the Study of Applied Language Technology and Society.
