Join us for a thought-provoking discussion with author, Carissa Véliz, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford, as she discusses her newest book, "Prophecy: Prediction, Power, and the Fight for the Future, from Ancient Oracles to AI". She will explore the ideas of how the powerful use prediction is not to see the future but to determine it, and how the tech executives of today are akin to the Oracles of the ancient world and the astrologers of the Middle Ages.
Prophecy is about how extensive use of predictive analytics is undermining our abilities to defy the odds, making systems unaccountable, and increasing risk in business and society while creating a false sense of security.
Throughout, Véliz illustrates her insights with stories that are both amazing and amusing, ranging from the Oracle of Delphi, astronomy, the development of statistics and the history of insurance to Seinfeld, and some of the most epic failures of AI. It offers the big picture behind prediction.
This conversation will be moderated by Sandra Matz, Lulu Chow Wang Professor of Business, Management Division.
