Scientific and environmental data from the government, universities, and private organizations is often inaccessible and opaque. This is especially true for local residents from marginalized and disempowered communities, who have been historically disproportionately impacted by environmental pollution. There is a need, then, to make this data more understandable and useful for local residents interested in protecting their own environmental health.
This talk will outline a three-year partnership aimed at addressing this scientific data problem through the development of an AI-assisted framework that collects local water quality information, connects it to health outcomes and local concerns, and communicates it in language shaped by local community members themselves. Speakers will also discuss the water problems facing the Newark community and situate this water crisis within Newarkâs broader environmental history.
