What does courage consist of in our age of rising authoritarianism and democratic backsliding? How can we build the capacity to dissent, protect one another, and act on our convictions in times of uncertainty?

In their new book, On Courage, journalist Julia Angwin and political strategist Ami Fields-Meyer provide answers, drawing on interviews with more than 100 activists and theorists from around the world to offer practical guidance for resisting authoritarian pressure. Mixing untold stories with history, spirituality, and movement research, their work serves as an invitation to consider what true courage demands of us today.

Join us for "The Courage to Dissent,” a discussion with Julia and Ami on Thursday, September 17, from 5:30 to 7:00pm at The Forum at Columbia University. Together, they’ll explore how people cultivate courage in the face of fear, what we can learn from historical and contemporary resistance movements, and how communities can form the habits and relationships necessary to defend democratic values in moments of crisis. Professor Sheri Berman will moderate the discussion.

This event is hosted by Columbia World Projects and All Tech Is Human. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. This event is free and open to the public with registration required. Copies of On Courage will be provided to attendees on a first come, first served basis.
