This hands-on 60-minute workshop for Columbia instructors is designed to help you harness the power of large language models (LLMs) to efficiently generate quizzes for your courses. You’ll learn how to design questions that support both formative and summative assessments. Together, we’ll discuss what makes a good quiz question and experience a live demonstration. Using these insights, you’ll experiment with prompting strategies that guide LLMs to produce effective individual questions and full-length quizzes tailored to your teaching contexts and aligned with your goals. This workshop will also provide guidance on formatting and exporting quiz questions as QTI files for seamless integration into Canvas. By the end, you’ll leave with a set of AI-generated quiz questions, a deeper understanding of how to write useful prompts, and a clear path for continued experimentation and refinement.
