60-minute session for Columbia faculty.
As new generations of AI models demonstrate increasingly sophisticated reasoning capabilities, educators face a new challenge in preparing students to reason effectively within their discipline. This interactive workshop invites instructors to explore what AI can teach us about human reasoning—and how understanding AI’s reasoning failures can sharpen our approach to teaching and assessment. Through guided activities, instructors will explore strategies for designing assignments that both challenge AI systems and reveal the contours of student thinking.
In this workshop instructors will:
- Practice analyzing AI-generated responses to reveal insights about common reasoning pitfalls in their course.
- Explore strategies for creating assignments that both challenge AI and illuminate student reasoning
- Apply best practices for creating tasks that can stump an AI model by focusing on non linear reasoning.
